Desktop switch freezes until Enter is pressed

Bug description:
I use 4 desktops in my work, using win+<right, left, up and down> to
switch between them. This worked fine until I recently updated to
ubuntu 12.04. Now when I hit any of these combinations, e.g. win+down,
the desktop switch occurs, but the switching GUI in the center of the
screen doesn't disappear as it used to. Also, mouse cursor becomes
invisible. You can see how everything looks at this moment in the
attached screenshot.
At this point, everything is in a very unpleasant state. Mouse cursor
is invisible, but it can still move. I know this because when I move
the mouse to the left, the Launcher appears. But other apps don't
react to the mouse in any way. The keyboard also doesn't produce any
effects. It seems almost as if it is impossible to exit this state,
and there is a strong urge to reboot the computer.
However, there is a way to get out of this state: hit Enter. Not
spacebar, not any of the letter keys, only Enter does the trick. The
GUI disappears and everything is okay again. So, to switch between
desktops, I am forced to press two key combinations in sequence: first
win+<direction arrow>, then Enter. Needless to say, working like this
is extremely uncomfortable.
