lightdm is endlessly starting and dying in a several seconds cycle

Bug description:
since the upgrade from 24.04 to 24.10 the lightdm login does not work
anymore and is starting and then immediately dying in a very fast
cycle. the only way to stop the endless cycle is to quickly try to
switch to the linux vt and press ctrl-alt-del for reboot and then use
systemrescuecd to run "dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" in a chroot to switch
to gdm3 login. i was checking various logs but could not find anything
obvious except for the segfault in the seat0-greeter.log (attached).
