Before the login dialog appears, a text-only framebuffer appears briefly with nothing but cursor blinking on the first line, which leads me to believe it's an Unity or X crash. I have just installed a fresh copy of 14.04. unity version 7.2.0+14.04.20140416-0ubuntu1 vim-runtime version 2:7.4.052-1ubuntu3 This happens with both vim-gtk and vim-gnome packages.
