I am facing the same problem but more frequently. I did not have this freezing problem with Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell XPS L502x. Once I installed 14.04 this freezing problem started. Sometimes to unfreeze entering into console mode and then going out works else need to reboot the system.
I have been looking for a solution for quite a while now and have not found a fix.
