Ubuntu never finishes booting: A start job is running for Hold until
boot process finishes up (3min 7s / no limit) -- removing 'splash'
kernel parm fixes it

Bug description:
Boot process freezes at the splash screen and nothing happens after
that. The computer can be suspended and it is able to return from
suspend. Boot is possible by pressing escape early in the process to
bypass plymouth.
