Graphics corruption on shell on login screen and session screen

Bug description:
After upgrading from 19.10 to 20.04 I am seeing blocky green and
purple artefacts on icons, background images and text. This is visible
on the login screen and once logged in.
Only the "shell" is corrupted and any subsequent changes, such as
changing the background image, are displayed without corruption. The
corruption is random but it is predictable that it will appear on the
launcher icons, background image and shell menu icons and text.
I've tried swapping between available graphics drivers but it makes no
difference.
Text corruption in menus is on particular glyphs selected at random.
In the screen shots, for example, all upper-case and lower-case 'O's
are currupted but on a subsequent reboot the affected glyphs will
vary. On filing this bug I also notice that the pop-up modal password
requests also displayed the corrupted glyphs. No programms run
subsequently will display any problems.
