I can activate HDMI sound through pavucontrol, and make it works this way, however, it should really appear (or just be there always) in sound configuration. In my research on this, I have come across advice to reboot my machine with the HDMI cable in, but that didn't make the output appear in the list. Furthermore, this blog post says it's probably the video drivers: http://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2012/04/14/audio-over-hdmi-and-displayport-in-ubuntu-12-04/ My hardware is a Dell M1330 with Intel GM965 graphics, so it might be the Intel drivers?
