Okay, I enabled the "Processor microcode firmware for AMD CPUs from amd64-microcode (proprietary)" and performance has improved somewhat, for both the Dashboard and streaming video playback (both embedded video and fullscreen video).
Dashboard still showing some garbage output, when I put in search terms, and the display does not tidy up after showing me the relevant icons; but searched icons do appear and Dashboard is usable.
