Crashes in unity8 cause infinite restarts and/or a permanently black
screen.
As experienced in bug 1578462.
I guess the problem is the 'respawn' keyword in:
/usr/share/upstart/sessions/unity8.conf
[http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#respawn]
