It's not about disconnecting from the external display (the OSK won't be
shown then if a BT keyboard is present), but rather picking the device
up and using its virtual touch pad feature.

Conversely, bug #1521518 discusses the opposite being a problem on the
main screen - that there is no way to invoke the OSK when an external
keyboard is connected.

Title:
OSK appears when device is connected externally over HMDI with BT
  conected keyboard

Bug description:
The current UX for the OSK when a device is externally connected over
HDMI is to always display the OSK even if a BT keyboard is connected.
Although it was envisioned this UX does serve a purpose: to allow a
user to disconnect from the external display and avoid manually
disconnecting the BT keyboard, we feel this is not the right
experience. The OSK should not appear in any instance when a physical
  keyboard is connected.
