Public bug reported:

unity-system-compositor does not recover the VT when terminated.

Test case:
Kill unity-system-compositor politely via SIGTERM (sudo kill ...)

Expected: The login prompt to reappear and Alt+Fn switching to work.
Observed: Screen stays black and VT switching via Alt+Fn fails (or Ctrl+Alt+Fn)

Workaround:
sudo chvt 7
sudo chvt 1
