Sorry for the noise: downgrading libfreetype6 to 2.5.2-2ubuntu3 fixed the issue for me. Hope that helps.

This won't happen every time but more like every third or fourth time. Yet, it practically means that sleep can not be used. I don't quite know how to narrow this down any further. I'm using xubuntu 15.04 and pm-utils 1.4.1.-15. I don't start the xfce desktop but run a plain x-session with i3 as window manager. The attached screen shot shows i3 with an open terminal that would contain quite a bit of text if rendered correctly.
