Hi Folks,

I had a very interesting talk today with the team from App Dev for All.

App Dev for All is a non-profit company developing two open source
projects to fix some problems in the world. This group is focused on
providing tools to develop applications on android phones that do not
require internet access. The main audience for this work is people
living in countries with very limited internet access whose only compute
platform may be a phone such as some Indian states and territories.

I'm bringing this group to your attention for two reasons. First, the
size of the application is not large and the team is welcoming so this
may be a community that you may want to join.  The second reason is that
App Dev for All has internships available for students, paid or unpaid,
for students who would like to learn about professional programming,
artificial intelligence, computer vision, or accessibility.

The community is supporting two main projects. The first project is Code
On the Go, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that runs on
Android phones for creating Android apps. It is intended for people who
need to create apps to improve their lives but aren’t of interest to
Western capitalism, or who are barred from accessing schools and
institutions of higher learning. Code On the Go is an
industrial-strength IDE for building full Android apps, without
compromise. It runs fine on low-end phones and Internet access isn’t
required. The product includes documentation, textbooks, and a
curriculum for classroom use and for stand-alone learners. Code On the
Go has an optional local Large Language Model to help software
developers and it can access larger remote models when an Internet
connection is present. It will use computer vision and speech to provide
a more pleasant user interface than the soft keyboard.

The second project is Internet-in-a-Box on Android. It is a port of
Internet-in-a-Box to run on old Android phones, like the one in your
junk drawer. This will allow every teacher and parent to offer
Wikipedia, Open Street Maps, and other Internet-in-a-Box modules to
their students and children at no cost, repurposing phones that would
otherwise be e-waste. Users get access to information in a safe, offline
environment. Both projects are hosted at
https://github.com/appdevforall/ under GPL3. Contributions are encouraged.

Please send inquiries to David Schachter (davidschach...@appdevforall.org).

Enjoy!

Heidi
