I am writing to spread the word about two openings for full-time computer
science faculty that may be of interest to those engaged in free and open
source software work. One position is a traditional tenure-track position for
candidates holding a PhD. The other position can be offered at the Instructor
level and allows us greater flexibility in considering candidates with
different academic and professional backgrounds. These openings are at
Dickinson College and the successful candidates will begin in fall 2023.

Our CS program at Dickinson has made a significant commitment to teaching free
open source software (FOSS) and humanitarian FOSS in our curriculum. We
currently teach two courses at the sophomore level that introduce students to
FOSS and HFOSS and facilitate their engagement with an HFOSS project. We also
run our own HFOSS project in collaboration with the College Farm - FarmData2
(https://github.com/DickinsonCollege/FarmData2). At the senior level we have a
two-semester capstone experience where student teams select and engage in FOSS
or HFOSS projects “in-the-wild.” All of the permanent members of the
department are POSSE alumni and are engaged in this work. The College and the
review process has been supportive and positive about HFOSS work from the
perspectives of teaching, scholarship and service.

If you might be interested in one of our positions please find the full
position advertisement below. If you know others that might be interested,
please feel free to share this e-mail with them.

Finally, if you have any questions or would like to discuss the positions
further please get in touch with me
(brau...@dickinson.edu<mailto:brau...@dickinson.edu>) and I will be happy to
talk with you.

Best,
Grant

Dickinson College invites applications for two full-time faculty appointments
in computer science beginning Fall 2023. The first position is a tenure-track
appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor; the second position is for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor or a Lecturer in Computer Science, depending
on the successful candidate’s qualifications. One position is a replacement,
the other is a new position in a strong growing department.

Dickinson College is located in south central Pennsylvania, 20 minutes west of
Harrisburg and a short drive from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia.
Dickinson is a highly selective four-year, independent liberal arts college
with 2300 total students. The Department graduates approximately 20 computer
science majors per year, and typical class sizes range from 15-25 students.
The computer science faculty pride themselves on innovative pedagogy,
student-faculty research, inter-disciplinary connections, and meaningful
interactions between faculty and students. The CS curriculum at Dickinson
includes an emphasis on civic engagement and the social value and impact of
computing. The College and the Department are committed to building a
representative and diverse faculty, administrative staff, and student body. We
encourage applications from all qualified persons.

More information about the department and the program can be found at
https://www.dickinson.edu/computerscience/.

For the tenure-track appointment(s), we seek candidates holding a PhD in
computer science or a related field at the time of appointment. For the
Lecturer appointment, we seek candidates holding a master’s degree in computer
science or a related field. Candidates with degrees in aligned fields who have
relevant computational experience are encouraged to apply and will be given
strong consideration. The ability to create inclusive learning environments for
an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the
successful candidate.

Dickinson tenure-track faculty are committed to teaching and research in an
undergraduate liberal arts environment. They teach five courses per year and
mentor undergraduate research as part of their own research agendas. Lecturers
at Dickinson are full-time, long-term faculty members who teach six courses per
year and mentor undergraduates without necessarily pursuing their own research
agenda. The successful candidates will teach a broad range of courses
throughout the computer science major. Institutional support for projects,
travel to conferences, and professional development is available for both
tenure-track and lecturer positions.

The College is committed to building a representative and diverse faculty,
administrative staff, and student body. We encourage applications from all
qualified persons. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, a statement on
teaching philosophy, copies of graduate transcripts and two letters of
recommendation that address the candidate’s potential as a teacher. Application
materials must be submitted electronically via QUEST (Dickinson’s online
application system) at
https://jobs.dickinson.edu/postings/6672<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjobs.dickinson.edu%2Fpostings%2F6672&data=05%7C01%7Chouserd%40dickinson.edu%7C8b909fc254324d53dd3308dad2476758%7C6232b05576b94c139b88b562ae7db6fb%7C0%7C0%7C638053501368369998%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=yFDZiKLVddFZu3V37iollzAP7RCHq2ooS4AFdAVxTak%3D&reserved=0>.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the
position is filled. All applications received by January 9, 2023 will receive
full consideration.
