Actually, I realized that I should post the one that Jeff and I put
together, and we can decide that way. :)

I have to run to class, but here's the cut-and-paste. I was aiming for
something that's around 2 paragraphs max (with lots of links). It has
a touch more revision to go, so I'll just paste it in the current
state.

Cheers,
Matt

I left the meta tags for the two paragraphs in for the moment, as well
as Jeff's question about onboarding, which should be defined or cut.

[DRAFT PROPOSAL AS OF WHEN THIS WAS SENT TO THE LIST]
Onboarding and Jumping Ship: Perspectives from Education and Industry

<Current State, Challenges>
Programs like Red Hat’s POSSE (Professor’s Open Source Software
Experience) or Google’s Summer of Code both aspire to encourage more
young people to participate in free and open communities. While
“summer of code”-style programs offer cash incentives directly to
students, POSSE targets educators, helping them integrate FOSS
projects into their curricula as well as trying to prepare teachers to
be guides for their students.

<What the talk is about>
In this talk, we will discuss the experiences of faculty who are
bringing their students to your projects, and the challenges they face
– from “onboarding”, [what is onboarding?] to keeping students engaged
for the long haul. We will discuss some of the strategies educators
can use, as well as what your open-source project can do to support
K-16 explorers within your community.
