Sorry to hear about Doug's passing, JC. His accomplishment of working 314 countries and 40 zones on Topband from 1/5 acre on CW lot is truly remarkable. Rest in Peace.

Hi top-band lovers

I was planning to do a 20 year review of the Waller Flag receiving antenna, I
first building it in November 2006. However, my good friend Doug Waller passed
away two weeks ago. Doug worked #314 new countries and 40 zones confirmed on
160m from 2003 to 2020, CW only.

Doug was an example of dedications and good engineering skill, major BSE
Mechanics . He loved muscle car and DX. He's DXCC #1 Honor Roll from W7 land
and moved to Florida in early 2000, Doug decided to work 160m. From his
subdivision, 1/5 acres lot, almost no front yard or back yard. Doug soon
realized that several active low band operators in Central Florica were working
DX on 160m that he was not able to hear or copy. The first receiving antenna
he built was a W7IUV rotatable Flag, That was an improvement but cut the chase.
Doug had a genial idea to phase two flags, the early design was 16ft boom and
two loops 14'X7', you can see it on the presentation bellow.

I must be sincerer, most folks in central Florida were making jokes about it.
Until Doug worked JT1CO over the north pole and nobody else in Florida was able
to hear or copy, including guys with several long Beverage antennas. In the
same week also worked R1FJL, but no one had beverage pointing to the Noth Pole,
right!
I meet Doug in 2006 and we become close friends; he motivated me to build the "Adcock
antenna" as he maned it. My design was bigger with 50ft boom, my first DX was 8Q7DV zone 22.
After several upgrades I named the antenna Waller Flag, in honor of the inventor Doug "
Waller" NX4D.

You can learn or see all about the Waller Flag Vertical and Horizontal from two

Now after 20 years using my Horizontal Waller Flag, I was able to work 308 new
countries on 160m and 40 zones, CW only, also heard or no complete the QSO,
with 16 more countries that I was not able to log. All CW from my city lot near
Fort Lauderdale FL. The backyard is 100 FT x 150 FT, no space for beverage
antennas.

Doug worked much more from than me from his 1/5 acres city lot . That's a good
motivation to everyone to work DXCC on 160m.

I will miss my friend Doug, RIP.
