Interestingly, I was just doing that this morning (RH ES3) :-)
Since I don't care for RPMs, I downloaded the .bin version. So,
1: cd /tmp
2: ./jdk-1_5_0-linux-i586.bin
3: mv jdk1.5.0 /usr/local
4: {change any scripts or config files with JAVA_HOME, PATH, etc...}
Not too bad :-)
