The next best thing since sliced bread is UML (no, not drawings of stickmen) User Mode Linux.
Some hosting companies give you a Linux VM with full root & telnet access. You can do with it whatever you want, install Tomcat, install JDK, PostgreSQL - whatever tickles your fancy. You can "reboot" whenever you want etc.
Yes, +1 from me. I've been using UML at www.memset.co.uk for 3 months so far without the slightest glitch. I couldn't live without my root access :)
