I suggest using a better JDK (1.4.1 is terrible, 1.4.2 much better), and running inside a profiler to see if you can tell exactly what's happening when it hangs. Then I suggest taking your findings to the tomcat-user list for further discussion and suggestions. Bugzilla is not a good discussion forum: you will get more and better advice on the list.
