We have noted that mod_proxy + mod_proxy_http are slow compared with mod_jk.
I think that the next step should be to try to find "why" instead writting a new modules. May be a quick hacked mod_proxy_ajp to replace mod_proxy_http is the first step.
Note that I am a bit reluctant to start a new module because I already had lost a lot of time in mod_webapp ;-(
A lot of people lost time on various connectors, so you're not alone ;) (the list includes me with my old HTTP connector in Tomcat 4.0)

Mod_jk, mod_jk2, http connector in 3.3, few ajp connectors and jserv on the java side, etc - it seems I lost quite a bit of time on connectors :-)
I'm more worried about lost of important features and things we learned than lost of code or even time. Most of the time was well spent - to learn stuff and solve problems, maybe not with the best solution but the best we could at that point.
