This needs debugging, as the issue is not reproduceable by itself. I recommend trying a newer Tomcat release if you can, such as 5.0.16 (just to make sure this wasn't caused by a bug which was fixed since - I don't think so, but who knows). Similarly, you should upgrade to Sun 1.4.2 if you can (it's faster), and verify (and post) your VM settings, in particular the memory related ones.
