Well, we do experience strange InputStream.read() timeouts (wait's ranging from 
10-100 seconds) when a request is firstly made on a connection, but it seems to 
be related to our blackdown-1.4.1-beta jvm. We changed to sun 1.4.2_02 and it's 
ok. Initially I thought that it was related to the upload timeout you mention.

It was more than a wild guess, but I see now that the process(input,output) 
method has been fixed (and thereby reducing the impact of timeout) in revision 
1.47.

Will do better research next time.
