Catalina does not care (it needs only JAXP/1.0), but Jasper needs JAXP/1.1
compatible APIs. If Xerces supports that, it can be used instead. Or, if you
don't use Jasper, you can remove crimson from the "lib" directory and use
whatever you want.
In general, Xerces is *not* an "economy-sized" download, so I'd personally
prefer to leave that replacement opportunity in the hands of the Tomcat
installer.
