I'm having an identical problem as Peter Maag posted ~5 years ago.

Unfortunately, his posting does not have a solution!!
Thunderbird connects to my new mail server (I set it up last week with
the toaster instructions) and just hangs on "Delivering Mail". I tried
manually sending an email and like Peter, entering a period does not end
the data part of the session.
Now, here's the weird part: if I telnet to localhost:25, entering a
period DOES close the data part of the session.
This was working last week, so I don't understand what changed.
Any ideas out there?
