I don't run debian so I can't answer on that. I build clamav directly from the source that is published via the clamav project. Running someone elses binaries/builds is asking for trouble sometimes since you don't always get vanilla in the package. Just my two cents. As far as I know however as long as clamav is in the path somewhere you should be fine, but not knowing your setup, I could be mistaken.
A certain amount of this should be trial on your part. Setup a test box/vm that you can try things on. It's what I do, and probably what most others do as well.
