John,
I had similar activity taking place, and I finally found in my
clamd.log that the 'database' was rebuilding approximately every 4 to
6 hours, and while it was doing that, I had about a 15 minute period
of 100% cpu usage. I finally found it by using the mrtg charts to
narrow down the time, and then catching the 4 or 5 lines in the log
that happened to grab about 15minutes of time.
I fixed it by catching a thread on clamav that talked about the
particular version of clamav that had a known database type of
problem. I updated by hand to the newer version of clamav and the
problem went away.
I had been running from a toaster install for almost 2 years
untouched, when I goofed something up and installed a new
spamassassin. After that is when the database issue showed up.
Hope this helps. Things have been so stable for so long that I have
not been following this list, and just happened to glance today. It
is not very often that I feel I can contribute.

Thank you. I took your suggestion and upgraded clam. I wasn't ever
getting high utilization, but something was going on with it. I also
installed the qmailmrtg stuff (which I didn't have installed before).
So, hopefully if the reinstall and upgrade of clam didn't fix it,
hopefully that will give me the info I need to narrow it down. Thanks
everybody for their help.
If the issue reoccurs I will shoot another email to this thread,
otherwise we will consider that the fix.
