I uninstalled ClamAV version 90.2 and downloaded and installed ClamAV version 0.92 and the 'calloc' error went away. Please note that the patch to clamav provided by Bill Shupp only makes some minor changes the final clamav and freshclam configuration files - not to any of the source - so you can re-use the config files.

I also re-compiled and re-installed simscan only because I wanted the latest clamav version number to show in the detailed email headers. I'm sure there was probably an easier way to accomplish this without re-installing simscan.

Anyway the error in the smtpd log files is gone and the system is properly processing mail.

My google results say that it may be a clamav error not simscan.

Take a look at the clamav log file. Please note that Fedora 7 and 8 i
don't know for sure if earlier versions do that but these versions are
shipped with a broken package of signature databases that prevents clamav
to function properly and the log file is silent.

The fix comprises of deleting the contents of /var/lib/clamav and running
a freshclam to download updated signature databases.
