xinetd is stopped and I turned it off in chkconfig. 
netstat -ap as root gave me. 
tcp        0      0 *:pop3s                 *:*
LISTEN      - 
tcp        0      0 *:pop3                  *:*
LISTEN      - 
tcp        0      0 *:smtp                  *:*
LISTEN      - 
If I run it after trying to start courier-imap it says 
tcp        0      0 *:imaps                 *:*
LISTEN      - 
tcp        0      0 *:imap                  *:*
LISTEN      -
