My toaster has been using SMTP AUTH only for the past year or so, and it works fine. I just set up a page that describes how to set up the email client, and haven't had any complaints.

Like Bill said, most mail clients support it. If they don't, the user can use their ISP's SMTP server to relay outbound mail.
