Hmm.  Perhaps see the attached patch?  I don't much care for it, but I
think it might work.  Someone will need to test it, and I'm unsure if there
should be a corresponding --with-ncurses check.  If someone wants that, they
can add it.

I haven't even tested this, so please do test it, Pedro.
