Sorry if this is nitpicky, but you can save two processes by putting
more logic in your awk code, e.g.:
unattached=$(tmux "$@" list-sessions | awk '!/attached/ { print $1; exit }')
...
attached=$(tmux "$@" list-sessions | awk '/attached/ { print $1; exit }')
