okay, I've installed gnome-terminal, and can reproduce your
problem.

You can prevent this issue with this way:

$ export TERM=xterm
$ tlf ...

but (after few seconds of testing) don't forget to set up your
shortkeys - on my side the F1 opens the help window of
Gnome-terminal... you can disable it at this way:

edit -> settings -> shortkeys (2nd tab from left) -> scroll to
"Help", there is the "F1" -> click to "F1" -> F1 changed to "New
shortcut" -> press "BACKSPACE" -> shortcut changed to "Disabled"
