sure, you are right. 

When testing the code I mentioned in my previous emails, we (of course) tested 
the measurements and compared it with the logs from Cooja.

The key advantage of the software based solution is the following: You can 
deploy it together with your code in the big testbeds (Twist etc) and get 
results without the need for deploying extra hardware.
