huh?   How do you figure that the msp430 can't get a clock granularity of
1us?

have you looked at any of the more modern msp430s?   The 5438 can easily
run at 8MHz at 1.8 v is very low power and a pretty reasonable chip.   Yeah
its TI so it is still weird but it is liveable.

I'm running the timers on the 5438 with a 1us granularity.   The basic
timing definitions on the msp430 tinyos implementation assumes a 1us ticker.
