At least 3 times my TW was corrupted (or I modified the TW and I regretted it later) in the past year. I was always able to go back to a previous version. Definitely I wouldn't disable the backup feature.
This is what I do: Every week (or every X number of days, your preference), I delete all previous versions except the last one of each day (i.e. I keep the latest version of each weekday) and delete the rest.
