as the excitement in our tummies begins to grow to a rumble, our friend ezra has this
to offer...

Hey everyone, so I wrote an article to be published in my school
newspaper (UVM)
promoting the upcoming slip shows in my area. It was really hard
writing about
my favorite band, especially since they're the slip, because there's so
much to
say and so much that words can not do justice, but I think I did pretty
good
job and I thought I'd share it with ya'll for shits and giggles. This
is the
version I wrote and what was published came out almost the same except
they
took out everything I wrote in the first person, no biggie. I'd love to
know
what people think if anyone wants to share. See you in canada,
Love,
Ezra

Dont let these guys give you The Slip
 by Ezra Lipp

This coming Saturday night, October 25h, dont miss a truly unique,
original,
and exciting band called The Slip that will be performing down the
street in
Winooskis own Higher Ground. The Slip is a trio consisting of brothers
Andrew
Barr (drums), Brad Barr (guitar), and long time friend and band mate
Marc
Friedman (bass). Over the last couple years as theyve increasingly
built a
bigger following and drawn more national attention, theyve been
categorized in
the large over generalized genre of "jam bands". This is not entirely
inaccurate, they do "jam", as well as play the same festival circuit as
many
jam bands like The Berkshire Music Mountain Festival, High Sierra Music
Festival, and Bonnaroo, but really there is no other band quite like
The Slip.
The Slips music often includes large elements of improvisation, just
as much
as concise lyrical ballads. They sample from many different musical
styles such
as jazz, rock, world beat, funk, and much more, while always staying
true to
their original sound which is really unparalleled and not really like
any of
the music styles just mentioned. The Slip can take you on a musical
journey
from a freeform ambient mantra, to a highly danceable and funky groove,
to a
crazy spaced out polyrhythmic mudslide, to an intense dissonant yet
melodic
climactic build, and then release you with a blissful lullaby, leaving
you
drenched in sweat and tears, all the while praising the lord. I know
these
musical descriptions dont really make sense, but how can one describe
to
someone else what a flower smells without actually giving them the
flower to
smell?
One of the things that distinguishes The Slip for me from other bands,
is the
very genuine and personal human characteristic of the band. Advocates
of social
change, sustainable living, and peace on earth, The Slip are sensitive
and
caring individuals whose music is not separate from their personalities
or
consciences. They are great listeners, not only in the sense of picking
up cues
from the other members of the group, but also cues from their fans, the
vibe at
a certain show, or the mood of a particular vibration in the world on a
given
day. And like all people, they are not incapable of "off" nights, yet
most of
the time they deliver the goods. If you really want to have some fun,
go check
them out in Montreal on Friday the 24th in the internationally
acclaimed club
Le Swimming. A good time should be had by all. If you do see them next
weekend
and like what you see, dont forget Brad Barr is playing a solo show in
Billings north lounge on Sunday night showcasing his talents as a
singer/songwriter/guitarist and its only 5 dollars at the door. So if
you like
good music and can swing 10 bucks, check em out, theyre kind of like
a box of
chocolates...and not everyone always gets them the first time they see
them, or
at all, but once you get it, you got it. Brad Barr once told my good
friend
Benny Tilchin, "its not just about playing music...its about loving
music, and
playing love." I feel like The Slip is a band that really makes this
clear.
