I wasn't writing down a setlist last night, so this is from memory. I'm
definitely missing songs between STTN and the Elvis song, and I'm sure some
of the others are out of order. Hopefully Ted or someone else will be able
to reconstruct the night a little more accurately.

Well, this was my last Slip show for a while, but it was a geat one to end
on! I was busy all day long, and took off from Portland just as soon as
possible, getting there during the STTN. I was a little bummed to miss the
Ovulators, but they were out in force dancing and prancing all night long. I
also missed the opener, but I could tell right away from STTN that BAM came
to play!!!

First, though, a word on the room. I guess the WOW Hall is a community
center or something, though there is a bar in the basement. The stage in in
a wooden room with four or five rows of bleachers on either side of the
board, about the size of a middle school gym. There were also wooden benches
going down either side, and a camera allowed those in the bar to keep tabs
on the show.

I missed a few of the tunes after STTN, but they were good, but nothing out
of crontrol. Everything got turned up a few notches with the Witch in the
Kitchen, and Marc tore a hole in my brain during Headshot. I'm not sure on
the exact title of the last song of the set, but Ted said it was something
like Mary Shelly, or Marry Mary Shelly. It started all slow and patient,
very mellow, and over the course of the next ten or twelve minutes erupted
into an unfettered gush of emotion and tension-release.

But it was the encore that really made this show special. As you see from
the setlist, it was somewhat extended to say the least, but they were
relentless the entire 45-60 minutes. Happy Snails is on the new album, and
Andrew plays that PVC marimba-type instrument that he slaps with a pair of
pink flip flops. This is the first I've seen him play it, and unfortunately
he accidentally tapped the wrong part of the lowest tube and it fell off.
After a minute he was back at it, though.

I had never heard Carry the Zero before, but it was GREAT!! Brad really
nailed the lyrics on this one. He announced the Poor Boy/I Only Want to Be
With You as the first song on their new live acoustic album that is due out
in two or three weeks to be sold together with Alivelectric. He took the
opportunity during this one to loop some feedback off his plugin acoustic.
But when no one asked them to leave the stage afterwards, Andrew really
showed us what he's made of when he stepped up for easily the most energetic
and heartfelt version of Children of December I've heard. This one and the
If One of Us Should Fall both put the Goodfoot versions to shame, as Brad
had us on the verge of callapse with the latter song. But they resurrected
the crowd with a short but varried version of Dogs that just sent my brain
sputtering back to the Reed show.

In all, it was a great show largely because the encore turned into a set
unto itself. By the end Brad and Marc looked really tired, but quite
satisfied with themselves, and the crowd had spent enough energy that the
incessant stomping and shouting that kept them from leaving the stage
earlier had died to a much more reasonable applause.

Get ready Ashland and California, these guys mean business!!

Peace,
Adam
