review:
found out at the last minute that the Slip would be
playing at the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival, but made
it to the fair in time to watch them set up their
stage. this street festival is big, stretching 12
blocks on Fillmore Street. lots of people, lots of
vendors, lots of music. the stage they played on was
at the corner of Sutter and Fillmore, and the upward
slope of Fillmore away from the stage made for good
views for most. oh yeah, it was fucking freezing too.

they opened with the Song of Mysterious Origin
(formerly termed "Kurdistan" - Brad called it "a song
of mysterious origin" the next night in Santa Cruz),
and it totally rocked. i think this song is becoming
one of my live favorites for it's awesome build-up and
Brad's fast moving (and very stretchy) hands (i think
at some points, his fingers were stretched across 6 or
so frets - on a nylon string guitar!). the crowd was
definitely responsive - i think the Pac Heights
yuppies liked it too.

the second song, i've definitely heard before, but
couldn't put a name to it. sorta bluesy and not a
regular time signature. they played it at Yoshi's as
well two days later (1st set 3rd song).

the next song was one i never heard before. it was
beat-driven and had Brad using his guitar as
percussion (tapping the strings). the sounds that
came out definitely had lots of effects on them - some
kind of flanged, harmonic sounding, i have no idea.
Brad was also throwing in some samples of his guitar
playing 16th notes on the same note. i didn't see him
record the sample, so i think it was pre-recorded
(first time i heard this sound was during Fuji at the
Lion's Den in nov 2002). Andrew was totally ripping
it up. definitely had a techno feel to it, and it got
some people moving. they morphed it into Mr.
Meowskers. afterwards, they dedicated it to all the
cool cats they've met.

after an Eastern, semi-bluesy, techno, rustic
americana, and then, a slow-singing song, the Fillmore
Street Jazz Festival got it's taste of a "jazzy" tune.
Yaki Soba was tight and i felt it was a nod to the
Jazz festival. then, they ripped it up with a slow
and deliberate Fuji. plenty of people dancing with
it.

they followed with Brad's piano instrumental song,
which was beautiful. ended with a nice Sorry. the
setup was pretty sweet, with astroturf laid out on the
street in front of the stage. people on the turf were
sitting, but along the edges was where people were
dancing. it was pretty cold and windy for most of the
show, but a couple of times the sun came out and gave
us a little warm-up.

all in all, pretty sweet. free, outdoor, and setting
a good tone for my first of a four day run.
