If I had to choose one word to descibe the venue, that word would be "sketchy".
As if the cop out front wasn't enough. As if watching him ogle this girl in a way-too-short skirt (who surprisingly failed to produce proper ID at the door) wasn't enough. As if the electric chair Brian described in the entry wasn't enough. As if the shape of the room wasn't enough (imagine two twenty by eighty rectangles at a right angle, sharing one corner. Now make them out of stone, with a forty-foot ceiling). As if the lack of high-end in the sound system wasn't enough. Take all of this, and then tell the band that the spot where the stage is is where the gallows used to be, and tell them about the cells in the basement, and all the prisoners that died when it flooded.
Like I said. Sketchy.
First night back (after Thursday's snow-out), not too shabby. I don't think anybody complained, though the band and crew didn't feel especially great about it.
The crowd seemed exceptionally talky to me. Maybe all the strangeness of the venue coming out in senseless communication. I myself was chatting with a neighbor of mine who came down to the show, but who had never seen BAM before, so I missed a fair chunk. Rainmaker is a really hot tune
Jailhouse Rock was a good call, though maybe it should've been jaiBAIT Rock "I didn't know so many twenty-one-year-olds wore braces..."-Anonymous
I guess Brad just thought of it on the way to the stage, and between everyone, they could only come up with the first verse. On the way home, listening to the Dead from '71, I realized what a poignant choice "Sing Me Back Home' would'v been. Maybe next time.
I watched for some mics to patch out of, but no luck. With the sound the way it was, and the room the way it was, it wasn't a HUGE loss. (Still would've been nice).
