Thanks to you and to Darcy as well,
I have compiled the source (it was necessary to change a setting that
made the compiler to stop after warnings, but an Internet search told me
how to do it). Now I have to "convince" the compilation system to look
into the right place, if I can't overcome this I will ask again.

Hi Giovanni,
I usually compile Guile from the source code myself.
On certain machines, you may need to tweak a few lines during
the build process, but Guile 1.8 or Guile 1.6 still compiles
well on most systems.

I would like to try the graphing command with the SVN version of
TeXmacs (revision 12509). I have a question on installation.
As far as I understand, I have to compile it from source; for this I
need Guile 1.8.
How do I install Guile 1.8 without affecting the rest of my system
(Xubuntu 18.04) where I have a more recent version of Guile which I
want to keep as "default"? I have tried to do it with the package
manager (I must have downloaded the package some time ago, as I
found it on Synaptic!) and I get the following error message:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/guile-1.8-dev_1.8.8+1-8ubuntu3-bionic_amd64.deb:
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/guile-config', which is also in
package guile-2.0-dev 2.0.13+1-5ubuntu0.1
which seems sensible. A brief search on the Internet did not help.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Giovanni
