Strange. Anyways: The texlive packages (...-asymptote, ...-pstools) should obsolete the older ones (asymptote, ps2...), yes. But for the workaround, it's better to rpm -e --nodeps asymptote etc. so that the other packages don't go (assuming they don't require that specific package) and then to yum install texlive-asymptote etc., not the old ones. I have not checked the form of the dependencies though (package or feature).
