Thanks Samuel. I know those first commands you referenced are not equivalent. Adam's note above helps me understand I should use a different approach for elements in testing.
Re: the up/down grading of packages. It seems this is due to my above approach. I downloaded a beta, but then treated it as released sw as far as trying to keep things up-to-date. My approach got me in a weird state.
