'default' and 'optional' are not opposed.

Media check was the 'default' before, if anything: in the past media
check was part of loader, so it wasn't on the boot menu. One of the
first screens was a prompt to check the media, and it encouraged you to
do so, and I believe the 'OK' button was the default: you had to tab
across to 'Skip' in order to skip the media check. So the current
behaviour is the closest thing to the old one.
