No clue on the original screeching MP3 issue though. --
I have done some testing. This is strange, but in two machines running Fedora 15 Beta/updated the screeching sound appears when playing mp3 files with mplayer. Playing ogg files causes no screeching. So, I tried converting some mp3's that I had to ogg(using other computer or from running livecd), the files played fine.
