I think I figured out one of the things that subtly irritates me in gnome 3 - the windows have no borders. When a borderless window gets pasted to the bottom of the screen (as the window placement seems to be fond of doing), it looks just like the bottom of the window sticks off the screen. There are no visual clues that it is merely right at the edge.
