I followed the instructions here:

And they seemed to have worked - the laptop get now blessedly quiet, and the
indicator light switched to indicate the integrated graphics.
(The fan noise did come back after a bit, though.)
The main issue now is the slow/flakey bootup, hanging for
multiple minutes. Plus it hangs trying to shutdown.
Hopefully that can be fixed.
