You can see the compilation options for mutt with the 'mutt -v' options.
You should see one compilation option listed as 'HAVE_COLOR' with '+' or
'-' before. If it is '-HAVE_COLOR', you know why the command does not
work.
As an example, here is my 'mutt -v' output, for a mutt-1.2 compiled by
hand: (sorry for the French subtitles ;)
