I think what it's talking about is the LILO 1024 cylinder limit.  The kernel 
has to be within 1024 cylinders of the beginning of its partition.  That's why 
there is commonly a small /boot partition which contains the kernel, a map 
file, and not much else.

So, try making a little /boot and see if that helps any.
