Jenn,
I'm planning to go for cable modem access later this year. What I've
heard is that Optus' "@ home" service (which runs on the same cable as
their phone system) is compatible with Linux, but Telstra's "Advance"
isn't - at least not without a lot of very time consuming friggin about.
I'm a member of HUMBUG (Home Unix Machine Brisbane user group) and there
was some much more technical (and probably more useful) discussion of
the situation on their lists recently. I could dig it out of the
archives if you want.
Will be really interested to hear how you go, if you get time to let me
know!
I have to buy a new machine first as the upgrade in speed will be
meaningless with the processor I have at present - a P133. I'm going to
wait until after GST has settled down a bit before I buy a new box,
probably August, and then look at getting @home shortly thereafter.
