(Note: This is for Debian. I THINK it's standard, but could be wrong.)
To switch to a virtual terminal which has a command line interface, try
the key combination Alt-F1 (or Alt-F2, or Alt-F3...). Alt-F7 takes you 
back to the X-windows GUI. 

Alternatively, you can use a command line within the GUI. Somewhere in the
menus will be a category called 'Shells' or 'Terminals' or 'X-terms' or 
some such. Within that, you will probably find 'Eterm' and 'Xterm' and 
possibly others - these will give you a window with a command line interface
in that window. (I don't know KDE, either.)


And best of all: neither of these options actually disables the GUI. Just 
gives you the command line as well. Best of both worlds.
